Answers, arranged by what you were trying to do.

If the thing you need is not here, the contact form goes to a person and usually comes back the same day.

Getting started

How do I start?

Create an account, pick a language, and press start on the first hundred words deck. The app adds the cards and takes it from there.

How do I install it on my phone?

On Android or a desktop, use the install icon in the browser address bar. On an iPhone open the site in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Other iOS browsers cannot do it, which is an Apple restriction rather than ours.

I joined a class. What now?

Your language is set to the class language automatically and any assignments appear on your Classes tab. Studying is the same as it is for anybody else.

Studying

What do the four buttons mean?

Again means you did not have it. Hard means you got there but it was a fight. Good means you recalled it normally. Easy means it was instant. Each button shows what it will do to the schedule before you press it, so you never have to guess.

A word keeps coming back and I keep failing it.

After eight failures it is flagged as a leech. That is almost never a discipline problem, it is a bad hook. Open the word, write your own picture, and it usually stops. If it does not, suspend it and come back in a month.

Can I change how many new words I get?

Yes, under Settings, Pace. Raising it is easy and the consequence arrives three weeks later, so watch the forecast on the Progress screen before you double it.

What is target retention?

The recall probability the scheduler aims for. Ninety percent is the default and the value the model was fitted at. Higher means shorter gaps and many more reviews for the same vocabulary.

Hooks

How do I write a good one?

Say the word out loud. Catch the first word in your own language that the start of it sounds like. Then put that thing and the meaning in one physical scene that could not happen. Absurd beats sensible, and short beats clever.

Why does this word have a note instead of a picture?

It is a joining word. Articles, prepositions, conjunctions and pronouns do not hold a picture, so the app gives you the word inside a sentence instead of pretending otherwise.

Can my students see the hooks I write?

If you attach one to a class, yes, and it outranks the house version for everyone in that class. A hook you write for yourself stays yours.

Classes

How do students join?

They make an account, open the Classes tab and type the six character code. Codes contain no vowels, so they never accidentally spell anything.

How is an assignment scored?

From the underlying records, recomputed each time the gradebook is opened. A deck assignment measures words actually started, a story measures the challenge score, a review assignment counts real reviews since it was set.

A student left. What happens to their data?

Removing them from a class only removes them from the class. Their account, vocabulary and schedule are theirs and are untouched.

Billing

How do I cancel?

From the billing screen, in two clicks. The plan stays active until the end of the period you have paid for and then drops to free limits.

Can I get an invoice?

Yes. For a single teacher the billing screen produces one. For a school, use the district quote form and you will be invoiced against a purchase order.
