Gender is not a second thing to learn
Teaching that a noun is feminine as a separate fact is twice the work and half the recall. Put it in the picture instead.
5 minute read
Ask an English speaker two years into Spanish what mesa means and they will tell you instantly. Ask them whether it is el or la and watch the pause.
That pause is a design failure, and it happens because gender was taught as a fact about the word rather than as part of the word. Two separate memories, learned separately, retrieved separately, and the second one is the one that never gets practised because you can usually get away without it.
The fix is a fixed cue
Put the gender inside the scene, always in the same way. Here that is:
- Masculine, the scene is on fire.
- Feminine, the scene is underwater.
- Neuter, the scene is frozen solid.
That is the whole system. It is arbitrary, which does not matter at all. What matters is that it never varies. If fire means masculine in the first hook you read, it has to mean masculine in the twelve hundredth, or the cue becomes another thing to remember.
Why it works
You are not adding a second fact, you are changing one attribute of a picture you were going to build anyway. Recall of the picture brings the fire with it, and the fire brings the article. The retrieval is one step rather than two.
And critically, the cue is retrieved at the same moment the word is, so it gets practised every single time. The old approach practised the word constantly and the gender almost never.
Where it needs care
- German has three genders and the plural behaves like a fourth. Plural gets its own cue rather than being folded into neuter, because die in the plural is not das.
- Words whose gender does not match their meaning are exactly where this earns its keep. El agua is the classic. The cue carries it and the intuition does not.
- Languages without gender do not get a cue at all. Adding a decorative one to Japanese would teach a distinction that is not there.

Why a picture beats a translation
The keyword method has been studied since the seventies, it works in every language pair anyone has tested, and almost no software builds it in properly.
